Vintage license plate? The DGT prepares a new registry for historic and classic cars

The General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) continues its plan to change several of the typical structures of road traffic. With , the institution directed by Pere Navarro is already working on the design of a new registration. A classification that will go to the oldest vehicles, in order to preserve these classic cars.

The license plate is more than just a detail on the front and rear of the cars. Thanks to it, a vehicle is distinguished from another, as well as information relevant to its age and characteristics is provided, so its care and not manipulation to cheat the law is more than important.

Along these lines, the DGT has already agreed with the Spanish Federation of Antique Vehicles (FEVA). A classification that will serve to delimit the use and conditions of older vehicles, collector’s and historical vehicles whose current use is already more limited than that of a normal vehicle.

The new license plate still has a process pending approval under Spanish and European Union laws

Currently with the original numbering or with a license plate under the H 0000 BXX structure (where 0 and X change to numbers and letters), the arrival of these new license plates has no estimated date in the Traffic calendar. In addition, prior to its release, the license plate must comply with European legislation as well as be useful for all historic vehicles.

One of the big problems today, since getting hold of this category involves a complicated and often slow process due to local bureaucracy. However, with this agreement between the DGT and FEVA, old vehicles are already beginning to see a more promising future, where their protection is easier.
