What is a UX Roadmap and how to do it – | Blog

The UX or User Experience Roadmap can be defined as a living document that prioritizes and communicates the future work of the UX team and the problems that they will focus on solving or solving.

A well-planned UX Roadmap will help the team achieve the research and design goals set within time and budget.

A UX Roadmap should help to designers, researchers, developers and all interested parties to be aligned around a single vision, a set of priorities and objectives.

UX Roadmap Structure

Regardless of the visual appearance, all UX roadmaps generally share the same structure. They are usually organized by context, scope and time and topic.

Main components

The main components for a UX or User Experience Roadmap are detailed below.

1. The context

The context consists of framing the meaning of the use of the Roadmap so that anyone who reads it can understand it perfectly. It is made up of the following parts:

  • Scope: It makes reference to who owns the Roadmap and explains its purpose.
  • Title: Product name that the team will use to refer to it.
  • Owner: Person to contact if there is a question about Roadmap.
  • Date: Last update of the Roadmap.
  • High level goals: The strategy of the company referred to in the Roadmap.

2. The weather

The time consists of the time frame in which the Roadmap will be carried out and it has 3 parts.

  • Now: It is UX work, whether research or design, that is being done and will be completed in the immediate future. They are well-defined tasks that solve specific problems.
  • Following: They will be the tasks in the not too distant future.
  • Future: These are the UX tasks that are 6 months or more away. They are not well defined and the resolution of the problems is still ambiguous.

3. Themes

Theme represents future UX workwhich includes areas of focus, problems to be solved and has a defined time in which the work will be completed.

Themes are made up of a number of elements:

  • Beneficiary and need: It consists of defining the problems to be solved and to whom they will be solved.
  • Objective: The objectives that will be achieved by resolving the detected problems are listed.
  • Property: The person who will perform the work and the type of work that must be done are mentioned. For example: , , etc.

Characteristics of Roadmaps in UX

UX Roadmaps must be realistic, with attainable goals, where functionality is valued over interfaces.

Some characteristics of a good UX Roadmap are:

  • They are based on user research.
  • It should be user-centric, not feature-centric.
  • You must tackle realistic goals.
  • It must be based on the strategy of the organization or company.
  • It must be collaborative, with opinions from other components to increase support and motivation.

The UX Roadmap is not an Excel with a release plan for the features required by the company, whether it is a business or a business. The UX Roadmap is a strategic document. It is an artifact for UX designers, researchers, developers and ultimately all stakeholders to define, organize, prioritize and communicate the work to be done in the future in the UX team.
