When to worry about redness and swelling from the Covid-19 vaccine prick

Side effects at the injection site in the Covid-19 vaccine are among the most frequent. They usually present with swelling, redness or even pain. This is a very mild adverse reaction that disappears within a few hours or days. However, the Spanish Academy of Dermatology and Venereology (AEDV) has collected some more severe local reactions.

The AEDV explains in a statement that since vaccination against SARS-CoV-2 began, dermatologists throughout Spain are receiving consultations about skin rashes in people who have received the SARS-CoV-2 vaccine. For this reason, they launched a multicenter, prospective, descriptive, observational study whose main objective is to better describe these skin reactions and assess whether they are related to vaccination.

“Among the secondary objectives, we want to identify the chronology of these skin reactions,” explains Dr. Cristina Galván, a dermatologist at the Hospital Universitario de Móstoles and one of the principal investigators of this study. “We intend to evaluate the eventual relationship between the skin reactions associated with vaccination against SARS-CoV-2 and the patient’s history (atopic dermatitis, allergic asthma, allergic rhinitis, allergy to other drugs, urticaria), as well as assess their relationship with the history of previous diagnosis of COVID-19 and/or with a history of skin manifestations associated with COVID-19,” he adds.

This study and registry of data on adverse skin reactions after the injection of a vaccine against Covid-19 began last March and will continue until June. “It is intended to include the largest number of cases possible over three months through primary care centers, hospital preventive medicine services, and dermatologists who want to contribute to this study,” said Alba Catalá, a dermatologist at the Plató Headquarters, of the Hospital Clínic of Barcelona, and also the main researcher of the work.

When is the adverse skin reaction after the Covid-19 vaccine normal?

The results of this study will be known when the information gathering phase ends. However, Alba Català has given an interview in which she explains that most common reactions last less than three days and occur at the injection site, causing redness and edema. “It is not worrisome and you do not have to consult,” explains the expert.

When the skin reaction after the Covid-19 vaccine should be seen by a doctor

The dermatologist at the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona explains that a doctor should be consulted when urticarial eruptions appear after the third day. In addition, delayed reactions have also been reported in the form of “very large plaques, sometimes up to more than 10-25 centimeters, in the injection area. They do not appear immediately, but after the fourth or fifth day after the injection. injection,” he says.

The expert explains that these types of side effects are due to a response from the immune system and that they are not serious. However, the consultation with the doctor can be interesting because a series of advice can be given before taking a second dose. In addition, there are treatments for pain.
