wordpress is a content management system (, Content Management system) written in PHP / known as a blog engine, but its functionalities allow us to manage websites.

Today it is the most popular platform to create web content, reaching 43% of all the websites that are installed around the world, which gives us an indication of its popularity.

In this post we are going to review all the sections that we find in the administrator and delve a little into the world of WordPress, getting to know the WordPress dashboard in depth.

How to access the WordPress dashboard

Once we have WordPress installed we can add at the end of the domain URL “/wp-admin” or “wp-login.php”

  • In the browser address bar, we add the domain name with /wp-admin either /wp-login.php in the end, uAn example would be this: https://www.your-domain.xxx/wp-admin
  • We add the name of user of wordpress either Email address Y password . This data was set during installation. If you forgot your password, you can regenerate it by clicking on Have you forgotten your password?

  • Once logged in you will be able to see the WordPress administration panel or dashboard

The WordPress Admin

In the following sections we are going to see the use of the tabs that make up the menu on the left of WordPress, which is the main menu:

At the top of the WordPress administrator we can see a horizontal menu that allows faster access to some sections of the main menu such as, access media, create a page…..

If we look at the top right we see a menu of options” display options ” which allows to show or hide some functionalities depending on the page we are on at that moment:

Right next to the Screen Options menu we see that we have the “Help” menu which guides us in the use of the page we are on:

The WordPress Dashboard

The first thing we find when we access is the WordPress dashboard.

On the left we have the navigation menu that provides us with links to all the WordPress administration screens and in the body of the screen the WordPress preview or dashboard.

Start

The eyelash ” Start ” of the desktop is the main page of WordPress, every time we access the WordPress administrator it will be the page that will show by default.

The WordPress Dashboard It allows us to get a quick view of the site, it shows different blocks with information, Latest articles, comments, WordPress news, etc….

The first block of the WordPress dashboard is the Welcome section where you can find quick access to the most used options in the administrator.

The first thing we see is a button with the name ” Customize your site ” , this button takes us to the Template Customizer.

In the options “ Next steps ” we find the links to write an entry, add a page and access the front of the web.

In the options of ” More Actions ” we have the links to access the widgets, Menus, enable/disable comments and a link to the WordPress codex with documentation.

The block ” Take a look ” shows us information about the posts and pages that we have published, the version of WordPress that we have installed and the comments.

In the block ” Exercise ” will show us the last posts published and the last comments made.

We have the block” Eraser ” which basically serves to write an entry, but in this case it would not be published, it will be saved as a draft to be able to edit and publish it later.

The last block is that of the ” events “, shows us the scheduled WordPress events that take place near our location.

We can activate or deactivate all these blocks to our liking, that is, we decide which blocks we want to be visible and which ones do not interest us.

At the top you will see a dropdown that says ” display options ” , if it is displayed we can choose which block we want it to show us.

You have this option in all the screens of the wordPress administrator and depending on the screen you are in, you will see different options.

You probably won’t spend much time on this screen, yes.However, it is useful to see things “at a glance”, and as new plugin/accessories/extensions (as I always say, call it what you want 😉 ) you will see how widgets with information will be added.

updates

The sub tab updates from the dashboard allows us to update, reinstall or check if there is a new version of WordPress and update plugins, themes and translations.

From this page we can select the plugins/templates and WordPress to update them:

Be careful before performing Updates since these operations are usually delicate and there is a risk that the web will stop working, as always the best recommendation is to have one before making the updates.

I always recommend, if you are not sure, to perform a manual update, that is, we re-name the plugin folder and directly upload the plugin folder by or from the file manager of our wePanel / cPanel account, with that we can always go back to re-name the folder we had before if the web crashes for whatever reason. Think that some plugins or templates may not be compatible with the WordPress version and we would end up with a down web, as always the best recommendation is to have a backup, wait about 15 days before updating in case the plugin has any problem and all consult the information of the plugin / template to see if they are compatible with the version of WordPress.

Tickets

In the next block of the menu we have the options of the ” Tickets

The inputs are what allow us to create dynamic content. When you write a story, a news article, etc… In general, the type of content that you constantly add.

As a rule and unlike the Pages, which are static, these are shown in reverse chronological order that is, the newest content will always be displayed first.

Another feature is that it allows us to group the content by categories and which makes navigation much easier for the user since they can easily find the publication or content they are looking for.

All entries

When we have several entries, we can order them in different ways (By category, Date, etc…) or carry out group actions to modify or delete entries. You also have a search field which allows us to find an entry directly.

As in the previous pages we have the menu ” display options Y Aid ” that allows us to customize the page showing only what interests us, by default we will have all the options but we can demarcate those that we do not need, author, labels, comments, date…. We can even indicate how many entries we want it to show per page, by default they are 20:

Add new

The eyelash Add new allows us to create a new entry where you can enter a title, write the content, upload images, assign categories and more….

This section has supposed a revolution in the way of working in WordPress since from version 5.0 we leave behind the classic editor TinyMCE to switch to the new block editor.

On the right side of the page Tickets we see some blocks:

  • The Publish block allows you to publish the entry by clicking on the Blue button, update or move it to the trash.
    We have several options, we can write a draft and finish the entry later or if it has to be reviewed by another person we can put it as pending review.
    We have the possibility to control its visibility and make it public, protect it by password, make it private or even control the date of publication if we do not want it to be published at that very moment.
  • The Format Block allows us to choose a predefined page template according to the content that we are going to publish.

  • The block Categories allows you to associate the entry to one or more categories, even create a category directly without going through the Categories submenu
  • The block tags allows you to associate one or more labels to the input (Keywords)
  • The block Outstanding image It allows you to associate the entry with an image that will be displayed on the front page of the entry and will be the one that will be displayed, for example, in the list of blog entries.

At the top we have the options element that allows us to add more blocks:

  • The block Extract allows us to write a summary of the entry
  • The Custom Fields Block allows us to add additional data, some plugins use it to add images, slides…
  • The block Comments allows to authorize the comments, that is, we can indicate if we want to show the comments in the entry or not

Categories

Categories are used to sort and group content into different sections. A website that publishes content on a variety of topics can divide their site into sections using categories.

Let’s take as an example a news website, we could classify the news in different categories “Politics, Sports, Society, Economy…” with this we achieve that the user can easily find what he is looking for.

We can associate the categories with sub-categories, that is, we can have a Sport category that will be the parent category and within that category we can create sub-categories for example football, basketball, motor….

tags

the tags they are used to categorize or make a broader grouping of the publications, Suppose we have a category that is Sports and we have a news related to hockey herb and in turn we talk about Melanie Garcia ( Hockey player ), in this case we could label the article with the words” hockey grass ” Y “Melanie Garcia”.
