A cyber attack on the Iberdrola group leaves the data of its users exposed

Iberdrola has been the victim of a cyberattack that has affected 1.3 million customers, although the hackers were unable to access users’ banking, tax or electricity consumption data.

The attack, advanced by Eldiario.es, took place on March 15 and was followed by other “massive” attacks that the company was able to block and prevent them from succeeding.

The attackers, so far unknown, have managed to access data such as name and surname, ID, address, telephone number and email address but they insist that not “financial data, such as checking account or credit card, nor data of electrical consumption”.

The electric company has contacted those affected and has denounced the events to the Police. “As soon as we learned of the attack, the necessary measures were put in place to stop it immediately and prevent its repetition. In parallel, we brought the facts to the attention of the competent authorities. Specifically, we filed the corresponding complaint with the Central Investigation Brigade Technological of the National Police and we notify the Spanish Agency for Data Protection”, they declare from the company.

Alert

Likewise, I-DE Redes Eléctricas Inteligentes, the group’s electricity distributor, has also warned affected customers in the statement to “be wary of emails or mobile phone messages that do not have a clear identification of the sender, when they ask for reserved information such as your account number, payment card details, or service access codes” and encourages you to contact the customer’s corresponding mobile phone operator “if you notice any incident”.

The attacks occurred the same day that other Spanish institutions and companies, such as the Renfe commuter service or the Congress of Deputies, as well as European ones, suffered the same problem.
