Barcelona reactivates the works of the L9 metro, by 2027

If new unforeseen events do not arise, L9 of the Barcelona Metro will see trains circulate along its entire route from 2027, although they will not stop at all stations until 2029, according to the calendar estimated by the Generalitat, which this Wednesday reactivated the construction of the central section of the line after more than a decade paralyzed due to lack of funds.

The tunnel boring machine that has been reactivated and must drill 4.2 kilometers underground in the Catalan capital has been hibernating since 2011, with maintenance costs of seven million euros at this time, while the pending works have a budget of 926 millions.

At the calendar level, the largest public work in the city in decades will accumulate a delay of 20 years, since in the original plans it was expected to be put into service in 2007. At the budget level, the deficiencies of previous planning, changes in layout and formulas unfortunate financing, have triggered the budget, which in 2016 already tripled the original estimates, with almost 7,000 million euros in cost, compared to the 2,000 calculated at the beginning of the project.

Currently, the L9/L10 metro system has 37.5 kilometers of line and 35 stations in service and, with the works completed, the new infrastructure will have 48 kilometers and 50 stations, with the forecast of more than 110 million trips annual, since it will cross Barcelona and unite it with the surrounding towns.

The completion of these lines, which work automatically without drivers, will transform metropolitan mobility, since they will connect five municipalities that are also among the most populous in Catalonia: Barcelona, Santa Coloma de Gramanet, Badalona, L’Hospitalet de Llobregat and El Prat de Llobregat.
