Saturn ceases its activity in Spain: it becomes Media Markt and closes 4 centers

Saturn has begun the process of cessation of its commercial activity in Spain, for which four of its stores will close (Oviedo, Murcia and two in Madrid) and another four (Valencia, Carabanchel (Madrid) and two in the Canary Islands) will reopen their doors under the Media Markt trademark.

As reported today by the business group to which both brands belong (Media-Saturn), the corporate bodies of the different Saturn companies that operate in Spain have made this decision.

In order to “optimize the portfolio in the long term”, the four Saturn companies in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Valencia and Carabanchel (Madrid), will reopen their doors under the Media Markt brand.

In addition, the four companies that operate under the Saturn brand in Oviedo, Murcia, San Sebastián de los Reyes and Plenilunio, the latter two in Madrid, will cease their activity in Spain.

The four affected Saturn companies “have already begun negotiations with their corresponding legal representatives of workers, with the aim of reaching the best possible agreement, both for the workers and for the different brands.”

Until the moment of the cessation of activity of the companies in Oviedo, Murcia, San Sebastián de los Reyes and Plenilunio, the shops will remain open, “offering the same service and attention to all their customers.”

Spain, “priority market”

Once the four establishments are closed to the public, customers will be able to use the customer service and post-sale services of their nearest Media Markt, the company said in a statement.

Media-Saturn defends that “Spain continues to be a priority market for Media Markt and it is expected that it will end 2013 with a total of 71 establishments throughout the national territory”.

Saturn, originally German and with stores in a dozen European countries, currently has eight centers in Spain, after having closed the first one that opened in the Spanish market, the store in Baracaldo (Vizcaya) in 2005.

The company also ceased its commercial activity in France last year.
