The trick of putting an egg in water to know if it is bad

The European Union is investigating a salmonella outbreak in six countries linked to Spanish eggs. It is one of the most dangerous foods, its consumption when it is bad can cause serious health problems. There is an easy and simple trick to check the state of the egg.

It is only a matter of introducing it into a glass of water. If the egg sinks and remains at the bottom, it is fit for human consumption; however, if it floats and remains on the surface, the egg is in poor condition.

It may seem more like a grandmother’s remedy than an infallible proof, but the reality is that the trick has the approval of the Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU).

At first glance you can also see certain aspects that are cause for alarm. The OCU advises against the consumption of eggs that have small cracks, since they could cause health risks. In addition, it must not present unpleasant odors.

If the egg is in good condition, the OCU recommends a series of tips and practices to avoid the greatest possible risks. For example, do not wash the eggs (humidity could contaminate them), store them in the fridge and always break them on a different surface than the one they are going to cook to avoid contaminating the yolk with any residue that may be in the shell.
