Create brushes with Photoshop

Photoshop brushes are very easy to create. We created a brush with Photoshop CS2 in a few steps.

We are going to do a little tutorial to create brushes with Photoshop from a drawing. These brushes can then be used in as many creations or designs as we wish. We will be able to resize them or change their color or opacity, thus easily increasing the possibilities of our designs.

Photoshop brushes can be used to paint with both the brush tool and the pencil tool. We can find various brushes created by different designers on the Internet, which are offered free of charge for any use. These brushes can be downloaded and installed on our system, as we saw in the article. However, in this article we are going to show you how to create your own custom brush and use it in your designs.

The steps to create a brush with Photoshop are very simple.

1.- First we create a drawing.

The drawing or design can be of anything and we must do it in one or several layers on an empty canvas. We can use any color, for example black, because later we can change the color of the brushes when they are used.

This is a test design, which still doesn’t seem very pretty, but it will serve us for the example.

2.- Then, with the drawing, created in one or several layers, click on the menu option, “Edit – Define brush value…”

3.- Now they ask us for a name to give the brush, that we can choose the one we want. It’s always good to be descriptive.

4.- With these actions our brush is saved and ready to be used in our list of Photoshop brushes. To use the created brush we have to select the brush tool or the pencil tool and choose the newly created brush. We can choose the brush that we have just created by pressing the down arrow next to the brush sample, in the options bar of the brush or pencil tool. We can see it in the following image marked with a red arrow.

5.- Finally, we can use the brush as many times as we want in as many designs as we want. The saved brush will always be available in our Photoshop. Also, as I said, we can change the color of the brush, the opacity, etc. via the brush or pencil tool options bar.

That is all. To finish, I leave a sample of the use of the brush that I have just created, with various colors.

Creating a brush with Photoshop is easy and useful!
