CUBA- Fire at the most important refinery in the country

An official from the Ministry of the Interior said that at least two people were transferred to the ‘Naval’ Military Hospital, but unofficial versions indicate that there could be several injuries.

HAVANA (AFX-Spain) – A fire of “great proportions” affected the Ñico López oil refinery, the most important in Cuba, located in Havana, on Wednesday night, with a balance of at least two injured, they said sources from the police and the fire department told AFP.

“The fire is of great proportions, not controlled at the moment, but we are working,” said a spokesman for the fire department, who pointed out that the causes of the incident are being investigated.

Another spokesman for the fire brigade explained to AFP that the fire started in a fuel tank and around 11:30 p.m. local time (0300 GMT) had not yet been controlled.

‘The oil is on and we are working so that it does not go to the other tanks. We already have enough technique working there. It is serious, but we are going to control, that takes time,’ added the spokesperson.

The authorities blocked all access roads to the area to deal with the emergency, and only water trucks and ambulances could enter, AFP found.

Ten years ago, in December 1996, another fire broke out at the Ñico López Refinery, located on the shores of Havana Bay and about 10 kilometers east of the center of the capital, but it was extinguished in about two and a half hours. , without major consequences.
