El Corte Inglés buys the Sánchez Romero supermarket chain

This Thursday, El Corte Inglés closed the purchase of the Madrid supermarket chain Sánchez Romero, with which it consolidates its position as a leader in ‘premium’ quality supermarkets.

Sánchez Romero has ten supermarkets in Madrid totaling more than 9,000 square meters and has a 4,000-square-meter distribution platform installed in Alcalá de Henares (Madrid), where the company’s offices and headquarters are also located. In total, the staff is made up of 419 employees.

The Spanish company, founded in 1954, specializing in the retail distribution of food and consumer goods, is characterized by the breadth, variety and differentiation of the products and services it offers, by the type and format of stores, and the high quality in the fresh product. Sánchez Romero closed the 2020 financial year with a turnover of 61 million euros (50% more than the previous year) and an ebitda of 6.2 million. Enric Ezquerra, current manager of the company, will continue to be linked to it.

The chain targets a ‘premium’ consumer profile. In fact, according to the OCU’s annual study, it is the most expensive supermarket chain in Spain. Its projects have included going out of Madrid for years and last March, its managers announced that they expected to open stores outside the region throughout 2021.

To close the agreement, El Corte Inglés has had the advice of Deloitte and Santander Investment Banking, and Sánchez Romero of Alantra.
