Euro symbol (€): what it is – Dictionary of Economics

The graphic symbol for the euro (€) is inspired by the Greek letter epsilon and refers to the first letter of “Europe”. The parallel lines represent the stability of the new currency. “EUR” is the official abbreviation of the euro registered in the International Organization for Standardization (ISO, in English) – and is used in the economic, financial and commercial field. The name of the currency appears on euro banknotes in both Latin (EURO) and Greek (EYPW) characters.
