GDPR course #7. How to configure the cookie banner with the best WordPress plugin – .com

In the seventh class of the technical GDPR course for WordPress we are going to learn how to implement a cookie banner on our website that complies with the GDPR.

The plugin we will be using is highly customizable, quite intuitive, and is freely available from the WordPress.org repository. And most importantly, it is one of the very few plugins I have tried that actually allows us to comply with the GDPR and blocks cookies.

Believe me: I have tried many plugins. Some have hundreds of thousands of downloads and do absolutely nothing. A disaster. Let’s see what pain points this plugin has and how to configure it correctly.

You see, implementing a cookie banner that complies with the law is complex. Unfortunately, and although many think so, the point is not to install a plugin, activate it and run away.

What do I like the most about this plugin? It has a free version in the very powerful WordPress repository, it allows you to add the buttons to accept, reject and configure cookies and actually blocks cookies until the user gives their consent. Cookies are loaded “on the fly”, without the need to refresh the page.

We need to follow a process and also maintain a bit of order to comply with the regulations and apply the GDPR correctly in our cookie banner. The most important point is knowing how to detect which cookies we are using. This will allow us to pull the string until we discover which plugin or script is setting that cookie, extract it and include it in the plugin just where I indicate in the video.

One important thing: we must also take into account that, at the analytics level, we will lose volume of data when we implement the cookie banner like this.

And alert! Do not be scared if you see a drop in visits in Google Analytics: you have not lost visitors, they are still there, the issue is that not everyone has accepted the cookie banner. And, therefore, we cannot track them.

In the previous class I asked you to analyze the cookies on your website. So now it’s time to install GDPR Cookie Compliance, apply these settings and implement the cookie banner. Then, use the tools that we have seen and check if you are really blocking cookies.

Issues? Questions? Feedback? You have at your disposal the intranet support form to solve it. See you in the next lesson!
