Glovo makes the first acquisition after the takeover by Delivery: buys 100% of Socialfood

Glovo undertakes its first purchase after the takeover by the German group Delivery Hero. with the signing of an agreement for the acquisition in Italy of 100% of Socialfood, a food delivery platform founded in 2013 in Palermo and which has more than 300 associated restaurants, as exclusively confirmed by elEconomista.es.

This operation is part of the to consolidate its presence in southern Italy -especially in Palermo and Catania, the birthplace of Socialfood-, where delivery is recording significant growth due to the demand for multi-category orders: from purchases to neighborhood store products.

“This acquisition allows us to become the one in Sicily and southern Italy and significantly expand the number of restaurants with which we work in this area,” said Elisa Pagliarani, CEO of Glovo Italia.

As he confirms, “in a few years, Socialfood has managed to become one of the main delivery players in this territory thanks to the important ecosystem created not only in Palermo and Catania, but also in Bari”. The objective is to continue, according to the company, along this path, on the one hand reinforcing the offer in the cities where it is already present, and on the other, “providing Socialfood users with all the services that Glovo offers”.

Expansion

With this operation, Glovo becomes the reference food delivery platform in the South of Italy, advancing in its commitment to also continue to be the reference point for multi-category deliveries, thanks to Q-Commerce.

A business model that is based on the possibility of shipping any product within the same city with just one click. All this thanks to a service with three large verticals: on the one hand, purchases through the app thanks to agreements with large stores (such as Prezzemolo e Vitale, Sole 365, Etè and Carrefour), the acquisition of supermarket products from convenience through Glovo’s urban warehouses located in the key points of the cities and the purchase of any other type of product thanks to alliances with retail stores in the cities where the service is operational.

“Glovo was born as a delivery platform for anything and has revolutionized the way citizens consume, offering them the possibility to buy, collect and send any product in a short time within the same city: from restaurant dishes to food, passing for flowers, toys, beauty products or books for the start of the school year”, says the head of the company in Italy.

For Pagliarini, “this has allowed us to become a reference for services such as food delivery, which grew by 400% in 2021. This trend continues even now by responding to the new habits of consumers who want convenience and immediacy” concludes Pagliarani.

Thanks to the strategic distribution in city centers of urban warehouses, users can receive their last-minute purchase at home with the same ease with which they can place an order in a restaurant. At the moment Glovo has already opened 14 urban stores in Italy, one in Palermo and another in Bari, which are experiencing significant growth, demonstrating that delivery today makes it possible to deliver any product.

The acquisition operation consists of several phases that will bring the two companies closer together under a single brand: Glovo. The Socialfood platform will be active until then.
