Gregorio Peña, at the Echegaray Awards: “You have to defend, help and vindicate the company”

The editor-in-chief of Editorial Ecoprensa, Gregorio Peña, as host of the III José Echegaray Awards held in Madrid, congratulated the honoree, César Alierta, on the award and thanked the sponsors Abanca, CaixaBank, CecaBank, Econocom, EY, Havas, Iberdrola, Metrovacesa and Banco Santander and Telefónica their presence. The businessman pointed out that the ideology of elEconomista has as its cause to serve a single purpose: “defend, help and vindicate the company, businessmen and managers through truthful and independent information.”

Peña began his speech by extolling the figure and the good work of both the winner, César Alierta, and the award recipient, the former president of Inditex and new president of the International Governing Council of IE University, and described them as “business leaders” assuring that they have known to do and develop, through his leadership in the companies, “rare things”, he asserted. At the same time he said that both have helped “the development of the country” and have put Spain on the map. Referring to César Alierta, the businessman said that for all the companies he went through “the transformation was the characteristic note and also with success.”

During his speech, Gregorio Peña recalled that Editorial Ecoprensa and, therefore, elEconomista, thought it necessary to highlight the management capacity of those people “who have contributed to the development of the company.” In this case, he assured that the trajectory of César Alierta endorsed the motion of the Management Committee of elEconomista, which took “a few minutes to be approved,” he commented.

“From the newspaper we will insist on prioritizing our maxim of being an independent press and defender of the market economy”

Given this, Gregorio Peña wanted to mention “some aspects that make him not only deserving of the award, but also exalt the award with his acceptance,” he explained. Among them, he spoke of a “successful” professional career, reiterating that he always “did what he considered right, and not what others considered,” and that led him to grow the companies he led. At the same time, he described him as a “pioneer” within the structure of the Spanish financial market and “an architect of the success” of the company’s transformation. For all this, Peña assured that Echegaray “would be giving us the reason” by giving this award.

To top it off, the businessman reiterated that the example of César Alierta “forces the Economist to ratify us in defense of the principles that assist us.” He assured that, despite “certain political positions and the eventual influence of social networks, skilfully managed”, he said, towards “sectarian and anti-freedom” ideologies. From the newspaper “we will insist on prioritizing our maxim of being an independent press and defender of the market economy” and, therefore, of the company.

Finally, he closed his speech by expressing his gratitude to the newspaper’s readers “who allow us to hold a leading position in audiences,” he concluded.
