Horizontal traffic lights arrive to protect Smartphone users

The high incidence of traffic accidents due to driver distraction caused by the use of mobile phones is already known. The problem has spread to pedestrians in large cities, who walk and cross the road concentrating on using their Smartphone and in many cases completely oblivious to the traffic that surrounds them.

A few days ago, the German city of Munich had to mourn the death of a teenager who was run over by the tram, which she did not see or hear arriving because of the audio headphones she was carrying.

Given the pressing danger that these habitual practices pose for pedestrians, the German city of Augsburg has begun tests with light signaling on the road, in the form of horizontal traffic lights. The objective is to warn pedestrians who are moving looking down at their Smartphone of the danger of being run over, making visible the mandatory red signal to stop and not cross at that moment.
