For these cases, when a user makes a purchase, they can then download the digital content, but this would already be a permanent purchase and not for a period of time.
For what you are saying, it would be necessary to have a private area for customers, so that to access that area you have to make a payment, and you can configure the period during which the user can access.

Keep in mind that renting a digital book is still something strange, because under normal conditions the user could download it (either because it is a file or because it is text that can be copied and pasted) during the rental period.
