When it comes to marketing, it is essential to have a marketing plan if you want to survive (and earn money) in a sector as competitive as eCommerce. And in this plan you cannot miss a discount strategy.

That is why it is so important to know all the possibilities available to create different discounts on WooCommerce products if you are working with this type of online store, although there is also the possibility of doing so.

Let’s see how we can do it, step by step, in this article. 😉

1. Why is it important to have a discount strategy?

Before launching to create the discounts, we must be clear why and for what we are going to make the discounts.

The use of discounts must be a strategy within your marketing plan and not simply individual actions.

Since poor planning can lead you to lose money, customers or brand credibility, this is exactly the opposite of what you want to achieve.

If you carry out good planning and do not lose sight of your profit margin, it can help you achieve some of the objectives of your plan, such as:

  • Attract new customers.
  • Loyalty to customers.
  • Increase the average ticket.
  • Get rid of stock.
  • Increase sales in times of less activity.

In this post we are going to see how to create discounts on WooCommerce products to help us achieve the goals on the list.

2. Discounts on WooCommerce products

2.1 Through WooCommerce native options

WooCommerce offers us a way to find it in the Woocommerce & Coupons menu.

This method is based on the generation of a discount coupon that the customer must enter in the payment process, applying the discount at that time.

It is a strategy that can help us achieve all the objectives that we have listed at the beginning of the post.

It allows us to create discount coupons for a fixed amount of the total cart or each product in it. And it also allows us to create a discount of a percentage of the cart.

It also allows us some usage restrictions such as choosing products or product categories that must be in the cart so that the coupon can be used.

Usage limits can also be set.

It has the disadvantage that it is not an automatic process, the discount coupons must be created one by one. And of course you must send that coupon to the user so that they can use it either through emailing, social networks or the communication channel that you have at your fingertips.

2.2 Through a discount plugin for WooCommerce

The issue of product discounts is one of the WooCommerce features that falls far short of developing a good marketing strategy.

And I think that the impossibility of automating the discount creation process is an important handicap that we can solve by using a plugin for this purpose.

There are several plugins to create discounts and one of the ones I have used is – Dynamic pricing plugin with bulk discounts, quantity discounts, categories, tags, newsletters and more.

It is a simple plugin to configure, very powerful due to the number of types of discounts on WooCommerce products that you can create and its cost is affordable within an eCommerce project.

The discounts are automatic, the user should not enter any coupon in the cart as it is applied if the purchase complies with the configured rules of each discount.

Discounts can be configured from a percentage, a fixed amount or even a giftand are applied to the total of the cart, to the price of the products or by adding a free product to the cart.

The discounts on WooCommerce products that can be created with this plugin are:

  • About a product or all of a category.
  • Also for variable products, applying only to a variation such as only one size or color.
  • About products with a certain label or attribute.
  • By the number of items in the cart.
  • By the number of the same item in the cart. Also with different discounts depending on the number of items.
  • For specific clients.
  • Gift of a product for buying a specific one.
  • 2 for 1 of the same product.
  • Discount on the third unit of the same product.
  • When buying a quantity of a specific item, one of the same or another gift that is decided, even that the client could choose from a list.
  • That when buying a certain item will generate a discount on another.
  • Gift product for a minimum quantity in the cart.
  • Discount for subscribing to MailChimp or Sendinblue.
  • Discount or gift for the first purchase.
  • Discount or gift after the user has made a certain number of purchases.
  • Discount on shipping costs if a certain product is purchased.

Plugin installation:

Once you have purchased the plugin on the developer page, you will have to go to the “Plugins” menu and “Add new” and “Upload plugin”. We choose the zip of the folder where we have saved it and install and activate the plugin.

Once installed, the first thing is to configure it from the “settings” menu.

Accessing the configuration screen we see all the options that we must take into account before starting to create our discounts.

“Mailchimp API KEY” and “SendinBlue API KEY”. This plugin allows you to offer discounts for subscribing to the store’s newsletter and for this you need to connect your WooCommerce with Mailchimp and SendinBlue through the API KEY.

“Disable coupons”. Disable coupons. This option allows you to choose if you want coupons created in WooCommerce to be used at the same time as the automatic offers created by the plugin.

“Display cart discounts individually”. Show cart discounts individually. It allows us to show the discounts as a total or by discount that is applied.

“Display each discounted product original Price crossed on the cart page”. Display the crossed out price of each product that is discounted on the cart page.

“Display the total products discounts”. Show the total discounts of the products. It allows us to choose if we want it to be shown as a total of the sum of all the discounts on products or to show the discount that each product has.

“Automatically add free gifts to the cart”. Automatically add the free gift to the cart.

Items that can be used as gifts must be added to a list for the plugin to offer them. When there is only one item in that list, it gives you the possibility that the customer does not have to select it and it is added directly to the cart.

“Include shipping in taxes”. Include taxes in shipping costs. It allows us to include the taxes of the shipping costs in the calculations of the discounts that refer to the shipping costs or discounts on the total cost of the cart including taxes.

“Completed Orders Statuses”. Completed order status. For the calculation of the discounts used by the orders made, we must tell you how we consider in our store that the order is made. The logical thing would be to choose “Completed” but depending on the type of management it may be that “Processing” or another status is used.

“Use new extraction algorithm”. “Use new extraction algorithm”. According to the plugin documentation, you can choose this option if your store is not very fast to improve the speed when calculating discounts.

Once the plugin is configured, we can go on to create the discounts for our WooCommerce store.

3. How to create discounts according to the marketing objective to be achieved

In this post I will explain how to set up a discount for each of the marketing goals where product discounts can help achieve this.

Before we will see all the possibilities offered by the plugin to configure a discount.

To create a discount we must go to the “Discounts” menu and click on “New Discounts”. We access the discount editing page.

“Start date” and “End date”. Start date and end date. The plugin allows us to program the discount.

“Repeat every”. “Repeat every”. It also allows us to turn it into a recurring discount by extending the schedule.

“User Limit”. Limit of use by users. We can configure the number of users who can use the discount.

“Rules group relationship”. “Relationship between groups of rules”. Discounts are configured through rules that must be met for the discount to be applied. That is, a series of conditionals are configured that will activate them. Each rule or conditional can be made up of different conditionals.

At this point you must say whether the relationship between the rules will be AND or OR. Being AND when all the rules must be met and OR when any of the rules must be met for the discount to be activated.

“rules”. Rules/conditionals. As I mentioned, the discounts are configured by rules/conditions that if they are met, the discount is applied.

And here lies the versatility of the plugin since it allows us to create a lot of different conditionals and on different aspects of our store:

  • User roll.
  • Customer email domain.
  • Client.
  • Number of previous purchases.
  • Total spent in the store.
  • Number of previously purchased products.
  • Previously purchased products.
  • Subtotal of the order with or without taxes.
  • Number of products in the order.
  • Number of products in the order.
  • Number of different products in the order.
  • Order products.
  • Assessment made on a product.
  • Payment method.
  • Billing country.
  • Shipping country.
  • Shipping type.
  • Subscription to Mailchimp or SendinBlue.
  • The user follows an affiliate link.
  • The user belongs to a certain group.
  • Currency type of the store.

“Action”. Discount action. Once the conditional that is going to execute the discount has been chosen, we have to decide what the action will be, that is, what the discount will be. And again we have quite a few possibilities:

  • Percentage on the price of the product.
  • Fixed amount on the price of the product.
  • Percentage of the subtotal of the order with or without taxes.
  • Fixed amount in the order subtotal with or without taxes.
  • Percentage of shipping costs.
  • Fixed amount of shipping costs.
  • Set an amount other than shipping costs.
  • free gift

“Percentage / Fixed amount”. Percentage / fixed amount. Once the type of discount has been chosen, we must assign it an amount.

“Product list”. List of products. This is the way we have to tell the plugin when we want to use a specific product or products for the offer. If, for example, we wanted to create an offer on a specific product, we should create a list where we would put only that product.

As with gifts, if we want to give a product as a gift when buying another, we should…
