IIS Administration

Concepts to keep in mind when administering the Internet Information Server server in Windows XP.

To manage the Internet Information Server server in Windows XP, we have a control panel called “Internet Information Server Services” that we can access in several ways.

1) Right-clicking on My Computer and selecting the option that says “Manage”. This opens the “Microsoft Management Console” or, said in Spanish, the “Computer Management”. In the list on the left, at the bottom appears “Services and applications”, among which we will find a searched option: “Internet Information Server Services”

2) We can access from the control panel. If we have configured the classic view, we will find an icon that says “Administrative Tools” and by double clicking, we will find the icon to manage IIS. If we had configured the view by categories of the control panel (the one that appears by default in Windows XP) the search for the option is a bit more complex: We select “Performance and maintenance” and inside we will find the “Administrative Tools” icon, which we had to double click to find, among others, the icon to access “Internet Information Server Services”.

3) Another way to access appears in the help of Internet Information Server. It tries to do a search for the file called “inetmgr.exe”. Once located, it can be executed and the IIS administration console appears. If you want, you can make a shortcut to that file so you don’t have to look for it every time you want to run it.

Once we have accessed the “Internet Information Server Services” panel, we have before us the possibility of configuring our web server in many aspects, for example, we can define the default document, create virtual directories, modify security options, etc.
