Know how to be (1/5): an essential competence

Posted March 9th, 2017 by in , , , .

Although it sounds exaggerated, technical knowledge has practically become commodities. In other words, today they are almost undifferentiated merchandise. The market buys and sells engineering, legal, medical or financial services every day. Partly due to the fortunate popularization of knowledge, except for a very small group of highly specialized professionals, excellence in the workplace does not derive from technical knowledge, but from transversal skills.

Today the competencies that lead to success are seemingly simple: communicate well, behave ethically, relate appropriately, keep commitments, and so on. And occupying a prominent place within these skills is one that we could call “knowing how to be”. Perhaps one of the most important and perhaps one of the most difficult.

Knowing how to be means having the ability to observe and adapt enough to carry out the pertinent actions at all times. Without going over the line, and without falling short. Proposing without invading. Selling without harassing. Listening without interrupting. It implies representing the company itself and its values above their own without sounding hollow or false. Knowing how to be is synonymous with demonstrating trust and earning the trust of others. It is to act in every moment as one should act. Nothing more. Nothing less.

In a world in which knowledge is available to anyone, either in social media or in the company itself, the professionals who stand out are those who know how to be.
