Learn how to use the Structured Data Testing Tool

If in a post last week we saw the possibility that Google gives us to use its , now it is the turn of the structured data tool or rich snippets tool. This utility is available from Webmaster Tools. You can access it through the following link: http://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/richsnippets

What does Google intend with this?

For a long time and increasingly, Google has been betting on structured data, in order to enrich its search results. For this, it makes more and more complete tools available to the webmaster. If you are hesitating to put in structured data, the answer is “do it”.

What information does the structured data tool provide us?

Basically in a single page it will inform us of all the structured data that exists in this URL. One of the main advantages is that we can test any page from any domain. That is, if you are interested in seeing if one of your main competitors has structured data embedded in their code, you can do so without having to search directly in their code. It also explains the type of schema that they have entered and all the elements.

An example for the URL http://allrecipes.com/recipe/spaghetti-carbonara-ii/

In the example above, we can tell that you have put the schema recipe, which includes image, name, author, ingredients. Besides, there are the videoobject, review, rating and aggregating schemas. In addition to this, it gives us a preview of these rich snippets and how it would look if it were displayed in Google search results.

Why is it important that our results appear with rich snippets?

The main benefit of this is that our data will be highlighted like in the example above. One of the main benefits is that it increases the CTR or Click Through Rate, that is, it increases the chances that the person who sees those search results will click on our result instead of our competitor’s.
