Logitech solves the big problem of wireless peripherals with the new Logi Bolt

Logitech has introduced Logi Bolt, a new wireless connectivity standard that will initially be used in business and productivity solutions.

It is in this market where Logitech is a reference, one of the most reliable brands; It’s incredibly easy to find Logitech-brand keyboard and mouse sets in any office, something that hasn’t changed with the advent of remote working. And increasingly, these peripherals are wireless, due to the growing needs of users.

That’s where the problems start. Today’s wireless connections have many drawbacks, especially in environments with a large number of devices that can cause interference and increase latency. To address that and other issues, Logitech today introduced Bolt, a new wireless technology implementation.

At Logitech they use the comparison with cars to explain what Bolt is about. It is useless to have a Formula 1, if you end up in traffic; no matter how fast it is, it has to brake and follow the same lanes as the other connections. Bolt is similar to an SUV, capable of finding his own way to avoid traffic; In the end, the result is that it is faster despite not being a Formula 1.

Technically, this is explained by the fact that Bolt is built on Bluetooth LE, something that may seem surprising but has two advantages: reducing power consumption and being compatible with smartphones and tablets that have Bluetooth. Thus, we can use the new keyboards and mice with our new tablet for work without problems.

Where Bolt can really show its potential is when we use the new adapter and connect it to a computer; in this case, performance will improve even in the most congested environments, obtaining low latency, up to 8 times lower than other wireless protocols, which will ensure an experience closer to that of a wired device. The receiver is compatible with all desktop systems, Windows, macOS and Linux.

The big difference is in a more robust signal, which will not interfere with the rest; thanks to this, we will not suffer ‘cuts’ and we will be able to use the devices at a distance of up to 10 meters.

The other great advantage of Bolt is in security; The connection between the devices is secure, to prevent attackers from intercepting it to take control of our device or obtain information. And for companies, having all the keyboards and mice in the office connected by a different connection will prevent them from affecting the operation of other wireless devices. In addition, Logitech promises features that will be useful for system administrators, such as the ability to push updates to all devices on a network and not downgrade for security.

Logitech told elEconomista.es that Bolt’s technology, for now, is only for its range of products for professionals and companies; although it confirms that the use in gaming devices, which could also benefit from low latency, is “under evaluation”. The company has today introduced new Bolt-compatible devices, two ergonomic and two more traditional for businesses and offices.

The big drawback of Bolt is that it is not compatible with current Logitech devices, and therefore, we will have to use a different receiver; although nothing prevents us from continuing to use the current models and mixing them in our office. Furthermore, at the moment only Logitech will use this proprietary technology, which it has decided not to license to competitors.
