Make a text that fits a circle, Photoshop CS2

Tutorial to make with Photoshop CS2 a text that is written around a circle. The text adapts to the shape of the circle

There are complicated tutorials with techniques to get a text to adapt to a circumference with Photoshop. Those techniques were necessary to use because Photoshop didn’t have a direct way to make text fit a circle or a curve in general. Now with CS2 it is possible to do this and get editable text that fits a stroke. In this article we will make a circle and the text will be written following the circumference. But actually this can be done with any type of stroke.

First we create a new file, in which we are going to draw a circle with the ellipse tool. This circumference will help us to adapt the text that we are going to write later.

We select the aforementioned ellipse tool and draw a circle. The size will be as desired. But for the test we are going to make an ellipse big enough to work with space.

In our layer list we will have the background and the ellipse.

So we take the text tool. When hovering over the canvas, our pointer changes to the typical cursor to show that text is about to be inserted (the typical text pointer is shown, which is a vertical line with a small horizontal line below and above). If we place the pointer on the same line of the ellipse we will see how the pointer transforms into a special text cursor, like the one we can see in the following image:

At that point we click to start writing a text. We will see that the text that we are writing is placed around the circle. To do this, the letters adapt to the path of the ellipse. The result will be something like the following:

Surely we have to edit the position of the text, to place it on one side or the other of the perimeter of the ellipse. We have to do this with the direct selection tool.

Now we place the pointer over the text. We will see that the pointer is transformed into a script to write text, in which an arrow appears next to it, pointing to one side or the other of the pointer. We can then click and drag to move a guide to reposition the text within the path of the curve.

If we want, we can thus manage to move the text so that it is placed following the curve, but on the inside instead of the outside. To do this, you simply have to drag the position of the guide to inside, or outside, the line.

With this we have our text around a circle. It should be noted that this text is perfectly editable, so we can easily change the size of the text, the color, the font, etc. Just like any other plain Photoshop text. In this way we will be able to adapt the text and make it fully editable.

The ellipse can then be deleted or hidden so that it does not appear in the image. The path is now associated with the text, so it doesn’t matter what we do with the silhouette of the ellipse.

This is the simplest way that exists to adapt a text to a circumference. I hope it was easy to understand.
