Malta already has its new Blue Window and it is worth visiting

At the beginning of 2017, the world received the sad news of the disappearance of the famous Azure Window on the island of Gozo, in Malta. The wind and strong storms did what a large part of the expert geologists had been venturing on for years. The quintessential Maltese icon was completely swallowed by the roughness of the sea.

The famous Azure Window loomed large in Dwejira Bay, on the beautiful island of Gozo. It was basically a large limestone arch, formed thousands of years ago by erosion from the sea. Despite the fact that its resistance was undeniable, at the beginning of 2017, the window could not hold on any longer and collapsed as a result of some very powerful storm winds. Some witnesses say that the noise produced by the demolition was deafening.

Malta’s Azure Window was used as a natural springboard to make great jumps into the sea. Although a few years ago the Maltese government had prohibited the transit of people over the arch, since its weakening was notable. Throughout its history, we have seen this great natural window towards the sea in countless film productions, series and even commercial advertisements.

When the window collapsed, the big question that arose was what would happen now to the beautiful island of Gozo, to which countless tourists flocked each year with the aim of seeing a natural wonder like the Azure Window. It seems that now there is a substitute and the island once again has a fabulous natural element.

The new Azure Window of the island of Gozo

It is known as the Wied il-Mielah Window, due to its location. It is located in Gharb and due to its shape and structure it could take over from the famous window that all tourists admired during their trips to Malta.

The new window forms a lush stone arch that rises directly from the sea. Apparently the level of protection of this arch is much lower than that of the old window of Malta. Despite this, it is in better condition, due to the fact that it is located on inaccessible terrain and the human hand has not yet succeeded in damaging the window.

The island of Gozo once again has a window to visit, where tourists can take the most impressive photos of their trip to Malta. In addition to this wonder of nature, on the small island there are endless places that are worth visiting.

Gozo’s megalithic temples, known as “Ggantija” are one of the most striking World Heritage Sites of the moment. They say they are older than the Egyptian Pyramids, dating back to 3600 (approx.) BC. Its name, which means giant, is due to the fact that the stones that make up these temples are enormous. In fact, the largest weighs about 50,000 kilos. The popular belief is that they were built by giants.

In Gozo, in addition to taking a historic walk through its capital, Victoria, where history has a lot to tell, you can visit some of its most beautiful beaches. Rambla Bay is an orange sand beach, which also has its mythological side. Diving and snorkeling lovers can enjoy this striking natural environment.
