Mercadona launches into self-consumption: it wants to take it to 36 stores in 2021

Mercadona has begun to take its first steps in its commitment to self-consumption to reduce its electricity bill. The Juan Roig distribution chain has already installed more than 1,400 panels in 8 stores, seven located in Spain and one in Portugal.

One of the main examples is found in the center that the company has in Burriana and which, according to the company in a presentation video that they have made, allows them to save on the bill close to 15%.

The distribution group also has important growth plans in this regard, since it wants to bring the number of installations this year to a total of 36 stores, which will mean the installation of 4 MWp.

Mercadona will invest 3.4 million euros in this development and aims to reduce its bill by around 600,000 euros.

The initiative of the Valencian company adds to the one it carries out in other areas such as its sustainable fleet, the reduction of plastics and the increase in recycling.

Mercadona has its own Environmental Management System, based on circular economy principles and focused on optimizing logistics, energy efficiency, waste management, and sustainable production, among others.
