Naturgy invests 528 million in the construction of 680 renewable MW

Naturgy steps on the renewables accelerator in the last months of 2022. The company led by Francisco Reynés is building 20 wind and photovoltaic farms and, in the coming weeks, it will start work on another nine projects. In total, it will mean the incorporation of 683 megawatts (MW) of new renewable power and an investment of 528 million euros.

The new facilities are located mainly in Extremadura (with a total of 310.3 MW), followed by Andalusia (150 MW), Canarias (71.9 MW), Catalonia (49.4 MW), Galicia (46.2 MW) , Murcia (34 MW) and Castilla-La Mancha (21.7 MW). This power will produce about 1,600 GWh each year, or what amounts to the same, enough electricity to supply 450,000 Spanish homes and prevent the emission of more than one million tons of CO2.

Naturgy’s history in the last decade has been marked by the transformation towards a more environmentally friendly model. His green bet came in 2015, with the approval of the United Nations (UN) 2030 Agenda for sustainable development and the Paris Agreement.

Over the years, the company has gradually integrated sustainability into its strategy. This is also reflected in , in which 60% of the planned investment (8,700 million euros) will be allocated precisely to reach 14,000 renewable MW installed in 2025, which will mean the commissioning of 9,400 MW and an annual investment of 1,730 million of euros.

It has 5.3 ‘green’ GW of installed power and is already operational worldwide

Currently, it has some 5,300 green MW of installed and operational power globally, to which will also be added the 680 MW that it is building in Spain.

Naturgy has also entered the commercial race for offshore wind power disputed by the large national energy companies. In fact, in April it announced an agreement with Equinor, so that it will be able to participate in the Norwegian company’s 225 MW Floating Offshore Wind Canarias (Fowca) project.

In the first half of this year, it allocated 255 million euros to the construction of different renewable projects globally: 136 million in Spain, 111 million in Australia and 8 million in Latin America.

In Australia, the company has several projects in different stages of development, which will allow it to reach a total installed capacity of around 1,000 MW in the coming years. In the United States, it is investing 264 million in its first 300 MW photovoltaic plant, the company’s largest in the world. Just across the pond, it acquired a portfolio of 25 projects, totaling more than 3.5 GW, and signed an exclusive 5-year development agreement with Candela Renewables, for solar and storage projects.

Opening of parks

It is expected that 10 of the 29 parks under construction will be operational before the end of the year. About 228 MW. In the case of photovoltaic solar energy, these are the Tabernas I and Tabernas II plants, located in Andalusia; Canredondo, the first to be signed in Guadalajara (Castilla-La Mancha); that of Miraflores, his first in Extremadura; as well as Salinetas and the Puerto del Rosario solar plant, in the Canary Islands.

As far as wind energy is concerned, together with the already operating plants of Torozos II and Espina (located in Castilla y León), at the end of December it is estimated that the projects of Els Barrancs and Punta Redona (in Catalonia) will join, as well as like those of Agüimes and Camino de la Madera (in the Canary Islands).
