To this price, customers must add another 150.87 euros/MWh, from the compensation to the gas companies that will be paid by the consumers who are beneficiaries of the measure, the consumers of the regulated rate (PVPC) or those who, despite being in the free market, they have an indexed rate. Thus, the final average price will be 327.33 euros per megawatt hour (MWh).
This figure is 27.36% higher than that of this Tuesday, when the final average price was 221 euros. Thus, it will again exceed the level of 300 euros per megawatt hour (MWh), which has not been reached since September 6.
This Wednesday, the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, announced to tackle high energy prices, among which is to establish “a limit on the profits of companies that produce electricity at low cost”, among others.

Why does the price of electricity vary so much?

The impact of the ‘Iberian exception’
The Iberian mechanism, which entered into force on June 15, limits the price of gas for electricity generation to an average of 48.8 euros per MWh over a period of twelve months, thus covering the coming winter, a period in which energy prices are more expensive.
Specifically, the ‘Iberian exception’ sets a path for natural gas for electricity generation at a price of 40 euros/MWh in the initial six months, and subsequently, a monthly increase of five euros/MWh until the end of the measure .
Without the ‘Iberian exception’ mechanism in operation, the price of electricity in Spain would be 355.68 euros (28.35 euros more), 7.97% higher.
