Renewables covered 44% of electricity generation in 2020 and this year they already exceed 51%

Renewable energies closed 2020 with a share of 44% of total generation and in 2021 they continue to grow, with more than half of the electricity produced up to June 23 from renewable sources (51.5%), according to data from the report. Renewable energies in the Spanish electricity system 2020, published by Red Eléctrica de España.

According to the report, the generation park with renewable energy sources in Spain closed 2020 with 59,860 megawatts (MW), 8.7% more than in the previous year. Thus, with an increase of 4,782 MW, renewables represented 54% of the total.

The growth in installed capacity, mainly wind and solar, together with the increase in hydraulic production last year, allowed 44% of the total energy generated in Spain in 2020 to be green, with 110,566 gigawatt hours (GWh), 12.9% more than in the previous year, thus marking a historic participation.

This boost from renewables last year made Spain rank fourth in volume of renewable generation, compared to the rest of the European countries. In addition, in terms of the share of renewables with respect to the country’s total generation, Spain remains above the average of its neighboring countries.

In addition, this increase in renewable generation is a trend that will continue in 2021, where more than half of the national production has been carried out with these technologies to date.

19.5% more generation

Thus, as of June 23, 51.5% of the generation was of renewable origin, 19.5% more than in the previous year. In addition, in these first months of the year, green energies have continued to break records.

In May, photovoltaic solar registered a maximum monthly production with 2,377 GWh, and a share of 11.6% of the national generation as a whole.

Records of daily maximums also stand out, such as January 23, when wind energy covered 49.6% of the mix, or May 6, where photovoltaic, with 91 GWh, contributed 13.2%.
