Romain Mazeries is the CEO of Mangopay, a company dedicated to the management and development of payment technologies for online platforms. This was born in Luxembourg back in 2013, and since then it has been growing and expanding exponentially. We talked to Romain to get to know Mangopay a little better from the inside.

Almost ten years ago you started your stage at Mangopay. How do you remember that stage? What motivated you to start on this project?

Mangopay is a collective journey. When we launched it, back in 2013, the marketplace model and the collaborative economy had only just begun: a generation of entrepreneurs emerged who ventured into uncharted fields and turned them into winning business models.

From day one, we created a solution for help marketplaces overcome obstacles technical, business and legal issues they faced. Our goal has always been to provide them with solid payment technologies and a secure payment environment that would allow them to grow.

We were one of the first to offer such a solution and have accompanied some of our clients, successful and innovative platforms such as Vinted, Malt, Wallapop and Chrono24, since their inception, constantly bringing them innovation and personalized support to manage their complex workflows. payment.

It is a gratifying feeling to be part of all these stories.

Since then, the field of digital payment methods has evolved a lot. What would be the main changes, in your opinion?

Indeed, the sector of digital payment methods has evolved very quickly in a very short time. One of the main changes has been the appearance of new payment methods. Right now we have up to 15 different payment methods integrated into our solution, and new ones appear almost every year. This forces us to be constantly innovating and developing new solutions that respond to these new challenges that arise.

There have also been great advances in the field of security. The entry into force of regulations such as PSD2 have turned the online payment environment into a much more secure and reliable environment for the end user, although it has added some complexity to the process in general.

What are Mangopay’s clients like? What kind of companies use your services?

Our clients are marketplaces or digital platforms who need comprehensive management of their payment flows. We work with companies that are leaders in their respective sectors such as Vinted, Wallapop, Rakuten, Malt, Miss Car…. Our philosophy is clear: Mangopay grows when our clients grow. We like to go hand in hand with them and make their businesses grow, while ours grows.

Companies that turn to Mangopay do so because they want a flexible solution that allows them to integrate all their payment flows and other procedures such as KYC, fund retention, etc., in a simple and scalable way. But also They choose us for the human quality of our teamwhich offers personalized advice and is with them every step of the way: from the beginning of their journey until they become great unicorns.

What are your main needs?

they need to someone who understands your business modelthat can help them scale quickly, and that can be flexible with their needs.

Why do you think they choose you over other options?

They mainly opt for Mangopay because of our specialization. We are the only platform that we are 100% specialized in the type of business of our clients. This means that we know their needs well, that we know how to accompany them and that all the product solutions that we develop are made with their current and future needs in mind. What weight does the Spanish market currently have for Mangopay?

Spain is one of the key markets for Mangopay, precisely because marketplaces are widely accepted in the country, and therefore we have a great growth opportunity. We are already working with companies like Malt or Miss Car that are beginning to stand out in their respective verticals.

On the other hand, we are also working hard to expand the team with the best professionals led by Nicolas Fournier, our Country Manager in Spain.

Is there any difference between your clients in Spain and other markets?

The marketplace environment in Spain is very mature, with great acceptance by end customers, so customers in Spain are more aware of the possibilities for growth in this area and are investing in their development.

We live in the golden age of marketplaces, an area in which you are specialized. What are the peculiarities of managing online payments in a marketplace compared to a “classic” eCommerce?

The management of payment flows is exponentially complicated in relation to the number of sellers on the platform. The very nature of the marketplace means that it incorporates a large number of different sellers, with a large number of different clients, each of them with their payment needs, fund transfers, returns, deposits, etc. It’s a complex ecosystem that requires specific expertise and that is where we can best help customers.
