The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, has announced an extraordinary Council of Ministers next Thursday, June 24, to eliminate the mandatory nature of the mask outdoors from Saturday, June 26.
Sánchez has made this announcement at the beginning of his speech at the closing of the XXVI meeting of the Cercle de Economía that is being held in Barcelona. “This will be the last weekend with masks in outdoor spaces,” the president has advanced, stressing that the forecasts made by the government are not only optimistic but will fall short in his opinion.
The president when he stated that Spain has reached “cruising speed in vaccination”, so “we will soon abandon the masks on the street”. Sánchez assured last Wednesday that in a few days “we are going to have more than 15 million people with a complete regimen and in a few weeks, 50% of the population with at least one dose.”
That same afternoon, the Minister of Health, Carolina Darias, confirmed that the end of the obligation to wear a mask in open spaces was “near”, despite the fact that the ministry and the communities did not reach any agreement on the matter in the framework of the Interterritorial Council held that same day. Some autonomy such as Madrid had shown their willingness to stop using them at the end of the month.
The streets and faces will recover their “normal appearance” in the coming days, Sánchez celebrated. “With this, we will return to enjoying life on the street without a mask.” In his opinion, this has been made possible by “many things”, but above all thanks to the group of “patriots who have been disciplined all this time”.
He has also thanked the work of health professionals and that of “so many” companies and professionals in the face of the pandemic. The milestones set by the Government are being met, point by point, he added.
The mandatory nature of the mask was established last year, under an order that indicated that a mask had to be worn on public roads, in outdoor spaces and in any closed space for public use or that is open to the public, always that it is not possible to maintain an interpersonal safety distance of at least two meters.
Thus, when this circumstance occurs on public roads, in open-air spaces and in any closed space for public use or that is open to the public. The order indicated that it was also recommended for children between 3 and 5 years of age and that hygienic and surgical masks should preferably be used, covering the nose and mouth.
This imposition of the mask was maintained in this year’s “urgent prevention, containment and coordination measures to deal with the health crisis caused by Covid-19”. The use of the mask in outdoor spaces was forced, among other sections, even though a safety distance of 1.5 meters can be maintained.
The accumulated incidence stands at 96 cases per 100,000 inhabitants
The Ministry of Health reported 4,197 new cases of coronavirus this Thursday, of which 1,801 have been diagnosed in the last 24 hours, compared to the 1,922 registered last Wednesday, which brings the total number of people infected with Covid to 3,753,228. -19 since the start of the pandemic.
Regarding the current average incidence of infections in Spain in the last 14 days, the report shows that it continues to decline, standing at 96.64 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, compared to the 98.78 reported on Wednesday by the department led by Caroline Darias.
