Share premium: what is it – Dictionary of Economics

It is the difference between the face value of a security and the price for which it is issued. In an issue of shares, for example, this premium is a surcharge paid by new shareholders, normally in order to increase the company’s reserves and avoid the dilution that they would otherwise experience, due to the entry of new shareholders.
