Site map –

Introduction

In this Lesson we see how to enable the Site Map in your WordPress with the Yoast SEO plugin.

We will see, with a practical example, how to deindex a WordPress Sitemap page that we are not interested in being captured by search engines.

Also learn how to insert the Sitemap URL into the robots.txt file of your web page.

Sitemap (XML Sitemaps) at Yoast SEO

By default, the XML Site Maps option is enabled.

Clicking on the question mark (?) show us the link “See the XLM sitemap” in which if we click we can see our sitemap.

Unindex Sitemap page

There are times when we don’t want one of our pages to be indexed and shown in search engines, and therefore not appear in our Sitemap.

To do this, we must access the corresponding page that we want to deindex.

We access the Yoast SEO tools section of each page, Advanced.

By default the results are always shown, if you want to deindex the page select NO in the question: Allow search engines to show this Page in results?

Once we make the change, we refresh the page and if we go back to our Sitemap (sitemap) to the corresponding group where you have deindexed the page, we can verify that it no longer appears.

Add Sitemap to the robots.txt file of your website

Accessing our sitemap from the aforementioned url we find the main index where we will find all the sitemaps we have.

Therefore, the URL of this index is the main url I have to add to Google and place in the robots.txt file. For it:

  1. We copy the url of our Sitemap index
  2. We access the options again Yoast SEO Plugin>Tools>File Editor
  3. Our robots.txt file appears (if it does not appear or does not recognize it, you can create it in that same button Create robots.txt file).
  4. We paste the main index url of our sitemap by entering the prefix before Site map:

  5. We save the changes to the robots.txt file.
