Social Security warns: this is the date of collection of the summer pension pay

One of the most important dates for most Spanish pensioners is approaching: the collection of the extraordinary summer pay, one of the two extra monthly payments they receive throughout the year. For this reason, Social Security has issued a notice to the people who will receive this payment.

The agency has explained that the date of collection of this summer pension payment will be the same as the date on which the pension corresponding to the month of June is paid. This is because the pay is entered at the same time as the pension in the current month.

Social Security informs that this date may be different for pensioners, depending on the bank in which the pension is domiciled, but that in general terms these pensions (and their extra payments) will be paid “in the last days of the period of accrual”.

Social Security is obliged to pay benefits between the first business day and the fourth calendar day of the month, but the truth is that as a result of the pandemic, the banks decided to advance the payment of pensions to give pensioners some financial solvency in those difficult months. The practice is still maintained in some cases and implies that the extra summer pension payment can arrive between the 23rd and 25th of the month.

A ‘regular’ pensioner will receive the extra pay in all cases, but recently retired pensioners must take into account what are the accrual periods of the pension. As in a job, the extra pay will only be received in full if you have received the pension for a certain previous period:

-To collect the extra summer pay, the accrual period is from December 1 of the previous year to May 31.

-To collect the extra Christmas pay, the accrual period is from June 1 to November 30.

In the case of accessing the pension in the middle of the accrual date, Social Security is divided into six parts (one per month) and one is entitled to one sixth of the extra payment for each completed month.

Which pensioners will not receive the extra summer pay

However, not all pensioners will receive this extra payment. There are cases in which the amount of the two extra payments is prorated throughout the year. This means that they do not charge less, they just have a different payment method and there are no inequalities.

Specifically, explains Social Security, this will happen “in the case of pensions derived from work accidents and occupational diseases”, which only have 12 monthly payments and not 14.
