But also, if we speak exclusively focusing on Inbound Marketing and the tasks or actions that usually exist around this way of understanding this digital world, Sumome becomes something vital.

Go ahead, there are all kinds of tools to supply each of the utilities that this plugin brings to your WordPress site; but none so cheap (it’s free) or so easy to use (zero installation problems and zero programming knowledge required).

So if you’re just starting out, or just need a few basic level utilities, Sumome is perfect.

Let’s see what all it can do for you, and how to get it up and running.

This is how the Sumome WordPress plugin works

Let’s start with the basics and quickly. The installation is like any other plugin (you know, via FTP or by downloading it from the Plugins menu, Add New).

Sumome information in the Plugins repository:

Once activated, the ‘register’ system does change a bit. You should go back to your webpage, not the editor, and look for a blue tick in the top right. When you mouse over it, a crown will appear. This is your menu to configure Sumome.

In the “settings” part you can configure where you want to place this button, in case you prefer it to be in a different place. Apart from this (if you don’t have the paid version), little else…

The important part is the “Sumo Store”. It will be here where you can install the different applications to your Sumome account, each one with its functionalities and advantages. Depending on their objective, they are distributed between ‘Email’, ‘Share’, ‘Analytics’ or ‘Communication’.

As you can see, all of them are very useful for any Inbound Marketing campaign.

Sumome and your Email Marketing campaigns

This part is undoubtedly the most powerful of the entire plugin, so be careful. Sumome gives you several options to capture the registration of your users.

Specifically, this part is divided into three ‘different capture’ forms.

1.List Builder

The feared, hated and dangerous pop up. The user is quietly browsing your site and suddenly… A subscription form appears, as if it were an angel, giving us the opportunity to enter the wonderful world of your list of subscribers.

Well, it may not sound like a good idea, but the reality is that these are the ones that work best. You just have to be careful and configure it very well.

To do this, beyond the “design” options and the link to our email manager (you can connect it in the “Services” section), the key is in the ‘Behavior’ part.

The ideal configuration, or at least the one that always works for me: Manual mode, which appears after 40 seconds (note, this may vary depending on the type of website, but think about how much time I need to understand if I am interested in your site) and every 7 days, at least.

In this way, the pop up will not be so annoying and your number of registrations will increase much more than with any other form.

2.ScrollBox.

This is another type of Pop Up, but much less intrusive and usually less effective. In this case, the subscription form only appears when the user has scrolled past a certain percentage of the page, as configured. It can be a good complement to the ‘List Builder’.

That yes, when configuring the ‘Behavior’, put a percentage from, at least, 80% so that it does not scare as soon as the user lowers a little. And most importantly, give it a minimum frequency of 7 days. Otherwise, it will appear every time you browse the web a bit and go down to read the content.

It can be torture 🙁

3.SmartBar.

It is a small bar that is placed at the top of your site (make sure you are not stepped on by any element on the web) with a call to action and the registration field.

You can also decide how often it comes out, although this does not usually bother you, you can always have it fixed on top, as if it were part of the design. It allows you to place it in the lower area, but in general it works worse.

The worst thing about this application is that it doesn’t leave you a field to include the name, unlike the others. In this way, depending on your style of sending the emails later, some may be personalized with the name of the recipient and others may not, because you will not have them. So be careful with later putting together the records collected by each one, because with the Smart Bar you have one less piece of data.

For these three applications, it is always advisable to indicate that they do not appear on mobile devices.

Sumome and your social networks

In the Social Media part we also have simple functionalities that can be very useful to us. Some are even quite original and, depending on the type of website, even come in handy.

1.Share

This is nothing more than a comfortable and simple bar with the icons of the social profiles that we want, and that allow us to share the page we are on on the networks. You can place it in many different positions on the web, depending on your design and where it is easiest for the user to find (and use) it.

It’s a bit annoying in the mobile versions (although at the bottom sometimes it doesn’t look bad at all), but you can customize which pages you want them to appear on. For example, if it is a corporate website with a blog, perhaps we are only interested in it appearing in the articles area, and not on pages such as “contact”.

In addition, it includes a small report where you can find out how many clicks your social buttons have received each day and which pages are the most shared from this application.

2.Image Sharer

Be careful with this one, because if your website does not have powerful, original and exclusive images, you should not install it. The idea of this Sumome application is to take advantage of a good image to get a specific page to be shared. Actually, what you are sharing the end is the URL, albeit from the image.

Once installed, different social media icons will appear when you hover over any image. From there you can perform the action of sharing.

Advice: If you have pages, such as Home for example, with many thumbnail images, it is convenient to configure it so that the option does not appear in those URLs, which can be annoying.

You can choose a default URL shortener that measures your clicks on the other hand as well. And remember to remove this feature in the mobile version.

3.Highlighter

Very interesting utility for websites dedicated to content, such as blogs or digital magazines. If the user points to a certain part of the text, it can be immediately shared on Twitter and Facebook. In other words, it is perfect for promoting on social networks, along with the URL of the article, the specific quote that we found interesting. In this way, dissemination through the networks is further encouraged, since it is not necessary to always share the title of the article.

Sumome and user analytics

The plugin offers us two powerful tools focused 100% on user analytics; that is, it does not measure the number of visits or your conversion funnel, but the behavior of your audience regarding your web page.

If you have always wondered where they click the most and what parts of your WordPress attract the most attention, now you can check it out.

1.Content Analytics.

How far do my users read the content? What extension is the right one to not lose them before time? These types of questions are answered by this Sumome application.

Once installed, you just have to access the URL you want to start analyzing and start the ‘recording’. In this way, you will see how many users you are losing as the page is longer, and you have to scroll.

In this way, you will see that the upper part is always red, because people always arrive there, but as you descend, the color changes to yellow.

It will help you understand what percentage of people reach the bottom of your website.

Obviously, if the URL has very little content and almost no download, this analysis is meaningless. But for blogs that are used to creating long content or with inserted infographics, it is great to know if they are really interesting or not.

You can start registering all the URLs you want from your domain; just remember to hit the record button on each one, separately (it doesn’t analyze the entire web, only specific pages).

2.Heat Maps

The heat map of all life, but free, fast and simple. It is configured the same as the previous application. You install it and start recording the URL you want.

You will be able to know which parts of the page are the ones that receive the most clicks, even if there is no button in that area.

It will help you find out if people think certain images have links when they don’t, which sections are most interesting, which buttons work best… If the part you’re most interested in being clicked on doesn’t have a huge yellow dot, you’ve got a problem 😉

Sumome and contact forms

This is probably the least interesting part of the plugin; it simply has an application with which a pop-up form appears in which you can suggest to your users that they write to you if they have any questions.

For typical sites, they can be interesting, since you offer a direct communication channel with the client in key steps, such as when they are completing the payment/shipping fields.

And you, how do you use Sumome?
