The debt of the Zaragoza City Council exceeds 1,000 million

The Zaragoza City Council is in a “bankruptcy” situation with accumulated debts that exceed one billion euros. This was indicated by the municipal government of PP-Cs, led by Jorge Azcón, according to what the ABC newspaper published yesterday. Part of these debts must be paid immediately, due to court rulings that several municipal contracts have won. However, the local coffers do not have sufficient liquidity, so the city council is forced to ask the central State for help and, in addition, it will request the Economic Impulse Fund (FIE) to pay the 35 million euros of the final judgments Condemnations to the consistory for price reviews of contracts and delay interest, as reported by the municipal councilor for the Presidency, Economy and Finance of the city council, María Navarro.

For years, Zaragoza has stood out as one of the provincial capitals with the most debt. The latest data from the Bank of Spain place the debt of this council at around 850 million euros, to which must be added 180 million of debt derived from the tramway and 35 million due to court rulings.
