The mineral-medicinal properties of Vichy Catalán carbonated mineral water prevent metabolic diseases

The mineral-medicinal properties of Vichy Catalan carbonated mineral water contribute to reducing the risk of diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, osteoporosis and obesity in healthy adults. In addition, it helps reduce stomach acidity, improves lipid metabolism and lowers glucose levels, according to the study ‘Effects of the consumption of Vichy Catalan carbonated natural mineral water’ carried out by the Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC).

This type of mineral water is rich in mineral salts and, specifically, it contains bicarbonate, chloride, sodium and free carbon dioxide. The trial has revealed that the consumption of a liter of water a day improves people’s well-being and helps prevent the risk of chronic cardiometabolic diseases. This protection is due to its moderately alkalizing effect, which helps maintain an acid-base balance in the body.

“The effects of this water become apparent a few minutes after its consumption, by imminently activating the molecules present in the digestive process. In addition, its regular consumption favors that this improvement is maintained for four to eight weeks afterwards”, stated the CSIC scientific researcher and author of the study, María Pilar Vaquero.

The study also shows that drinking this water lowers LDL cholesterol and reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease in healthy adults. In addition, it speeds up the filtering process of the kidneys, “reducing calcium losses through urine because it is a moderately alkaline water with an amount of bicarbonate that, in addition, is a stomach protector,” the author pointed out.

DOES NOT RAISE BLOOD PRESSURE

The results show that this water, which provides 1 gram of sodium and 2 grams of bicarbonate per liter, does not raise blood pressure, so its consumption is recommended for people with hypertension.

“Sodium is not the same as sodium chloride. The former is considered a nutrient, and the latter is known as table salt. When a person is hypertensive, they are advised to decrease their salt intake, but sodium bicarbonate of Vichy Catalán water is a protective compound and, therefore, it is recommended for these people”, explained Vaquero.

In addition, it has an important role in the Mediterranean diet which, together with a healthy lifestyle and diet, positively influences people’s health, displacing the consumption of other sugary drinks. “Health is a combination of various factors, and we must bear in mind that there are no good or bad foods, everything should be eaten in moderation,” said the CSIC scientist.

The research has lasted three years and has been carried out on sixty volunteers who have consumed half a liter of carbonated water daily at lunch and dinner, compared to periods of controlled mineral water intake. Meanwhile, various measurements were made, such as control of body weight, diet, blood pressure, and monitoring of metabolic markers in blood and urine.

“The results of this new clinical trial reflect, once again, Vichy Catalán’s commitment to the health and well-being of people, as well as its strong commitment to research and innovation, with a view to offering beneficial products for health, such as the production of sugar-free drinks”, pointed out the Director of Product Development at Vichy Catalán, Alberto Cabadas.
