The ‘Nestlé case’ explodes: these are the products that the company claims are unhealthy

Nestlé, the world’s largest food company, has recognized that more than 60% of its products are unhealthy. A fact that leaves a bad image for the Swiss multinational, after among senior executives where the worst foods are brandished and the steps that must be followed to improve their quality.

Just 37% of the entire Nestlé portfolio, excluding pet products and specialist medical nutrition, is rated above 3.5 (out of 5) by a well-known Australian food rating system. This has been recognized by the company itself, highlighting food (around 70% do not pass the threshold), drinks (96% do not comply) and ice cream and pastries (99% are “unhealthy”).

“We have made significant improvements to our products, but our portfolio still underperforms against external definitions of health, in a landscape where regulatory pressure and consumer demands have increased,” the Nestlé internal report notes.

The Nesquik is marked again

In addition, this presentation also points to four specific products that the company itself considers among the worst. First of all, the , as well as the , which contain almost 50% of the amount of sodium that a person should consume each day.

Also highly regarded is , containing 7.1 grams of sugar per 100 milliliters and earning an E rating (worst) on the Nutri-Score system. “Should an avant-garde brand have an E?” Nestlé itself asks.

Finally, the , has 14 grams of sugar in each 14-gram portion mixed with colorings and flavorings. In addition, it stands out that this last product is sold in the United States under the slogan “the perfect breakfast for children to be prepared for the day.”

Nestlé is working to change the recipes of its products but it is not easy because of the already highly adapted brand of its unique flavor

Therefore, in all this string of products, only coffee, specialized products for babies, dairy products (60% reach the threshold) and water (82% pass the 3.5 rating) are spared. Four sections that together with the excluded articles for pets and those specialized in medical nutrition, come to mean around half of the income of the multinational (92,600 million Swiss francs or just over 84,000 million euros).

Being the largest food company, Nestlé wants this internal report to serve as a wake-up call to its executives and to continue working to manufacture healthier products. A mission in which the company has always recognized that it is working, but which is not easy given that its sales volume and its market strategy must satisfy an immense demand, which has already associated a specific flavor and product.
