The success of ‘The Squid Game’ makes the classic Vans slip-ons an object of desire

In recent years, Netflix has become the gateway to stardom for many actors. From patriotic examples, such as the protagonists of La Casa de Papel, to the young actors of Stranger Things or Sex Education, appearing on the platform has catapulted their careers.

An effect that also extends to some of the garments that have appeared in these already iconic series. With Stranger Things, the fashion of the 80s returned. With the premiere of the third season of The Crown, Lady Di’s sheep sweater from Warm & Wonderful went so viral that the label returned to sell it after two decades. Now, with the premiere of The Squid Game, the platform has made a staple of players’ uniforms an object of desire: the classic white Vans slip-ons. Such is the obsession that its sales have risen 7,800% in just three weeks.

Many might think it’s just a coincidence, since Vans slip-ons have been on the market for almost 45 years and are part of skater culture, but it’s not. As reported by Variety, the increase in sales corresponds to the premiere of the series on Netflix. In addition, the search on the internet for this model of sneakers has also increased since then, almost 100% more than before, immersing half the world in the universe of The Squid Game.

The Korean series is a scathing critique of current capitalism that owes its brutal success to global greed, in the words of its creator, Hwang Dong-hyuk. A consumerism that is now reflected in the real world with the increase in sales of Vans shoes.

There are only a few weeks left until Halloween and, if in previous years, the red uniform and the Salvador Dalí mask were the kings of costume parties, it seems that this year the throne will be held by the classic Vans slip-ons and the tracksuit combined in green.
