These are the documents that you should always carry in the car: fines of up to 3,000 euros if you do not have them

Tires in good condition, lights in perfect working order, belts not damaged… and the papers of the car always present. One of the most fundamental aspects in a vehicle is to carry all the available documentation. Just as if it were the engine, the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) reminds that not carrying them is punishable by heavy fines.

The driver’s license, the circulation permit, the technical vehicle inspection card (ITV) and the compulsory insurance. These are the four papers that every driver must always carry in their vehicle, whatever the type. Available for any procedure, from giving a report to the request of a traffic agent, not carrying them or falsifying them is considered a serious risk to road safety.

And that is why the DGT wanted to remember the importance of these documents, which do not take up space or bother any compartment of the car. Recommended to keep in the glove compartment, to be available within reach of the driver, these four pieces of paper constitute the guarantee that current European regulations are complied with.

Different fines depending on the document

Always in original format, so they cannot be scanned or counterfeited, and new technologies proliferate that make it much easier to have them available. Through the miDGT app, the Traffic officer, all these documents can be uploaded so it can be a safeguard in case you do not have any of the papers that the agents require.

In any case, whether they are not available in physical or digital format, there are different fines according to each of the four documents:

– Driving license. Not carrying it involves a fine of 10 euros (it can be raised to 100 euros but it is very unusual), while having it with some incorrect information, such as the address, the fine rises to 80 euros. If it is expired, the amount already amounts to 200 euros and if you are not authorized to drive, due to a prior serious sanction, it is considered a criminal offense with six months in jail and community work for one to two years.

– Circulation permit. Like the fact of not carrying the card, not having the vehicle’s circulation permit carries a penalty of 10 euros, while having an erroneous data is penalized with 80 euros. For its part, circulate without authorization or having been withdrawn it supposes a fine of 500 euros.

– VAT. With the report enabled and the corresponding sticker, not wearing the first of these aspects entails a penalty of 10 euros. More extensive is not having the sticker on, since you are fined 100 euros and the agent can check at any time if it has passed the inspection or not. Finally, driving with the ITV expired or after the pass has been denied, is penalized with 200 euros.

– Obligatory insurance. In any of the modalities available according to the company, all vehicles must be insured in order to circulate. Of course, since 2008 it is the only document that is not essential to have physically because the agents can check it in a moment. Of course, going without insurance or with it expired is sanctioned with fines of 601 euros to 3,005 euros as well as the immobilization of the vehicle.
