This is the change in the date of collection of unemployment and SEPE subsidies

The date of collection of unemployment benefits is key for the more than 1.67 million who receive them in our country (), so any change is a delicate matter for all beneficiaries. And recently there has been a modification on that date on which unemployment, unemployment benefits or Active Insertion Income are received.

The reason is that the more traditional collection dates for these benefits have returned, between the 10th and 15th of each month. A collection period that is delayed a few days compared to what has been done during the last two years.

Why was the payment of SEPE benefits advanced?

The cause, as in many other changes in our lives, has been in the coronavirus pandemic. As a result of the economic crisis derived from the health one, it was decided to advance the payment of unemployment benefits to provide some economic coverage to those especially vulnerable groups and in a situation of flood of ERTEs.

In May 2020, with the population still confined, the State Public Employment Service (SEPE) signed agreements with CECA, the Spanish Banking Association (AEB) and the National Union of Credit Cooperatives (UNAC) to agree advance payment of benefits and agree to do so before the 7th of each month.

This measure, the SEPE reported at the time, was intended to “improve the liquidity of the beneficiaries of unemployment benefits or subsidies managed by the SEPE, when due to the volume of applications submitted due to COVID-19 and the existing deadlines for the payment of the list of benefits make it important to facilitate and anticipate the liquidity of the benefits of the people affected”.

Not everyone was able to benefit from the measure. In the texts of the different agreements it was made clear that it applied to people who generated unemployment benefits from May 1, 2020, but with effect from March 14, the date on which the State of Alarm began after the emergency sanitary.

What in principle was a three-month measure was extended over time, but after two years of the pandemic, SEPE explained that the usual payment period was being recovered. reported that the payment of benefits occurs between the 10th and 15th of each month and that, under normal circumstances, benefits are paid “on the 10th or, if it is a holiday, the next business day of each month”.

The rest of the SEPE changes

It has not been the last change of the SEPE in the last year. The body has been progressively recovering all the aspects that it modified as a result of the pandemic. The first of these was the return to the Active Job Search request as and months later it was followed by the , which was automatically renewed at the beginning of the pandemic to avoid face-to-face procedures (the offices were closed).

To all this has been added a recent and very important change: the SEPE to expedite a process that has aroused not a few criticisms from citizens due to the difficulty of finding gaps. The agency not only modified the online procedures, but also changed the telephone number: it is now 91 926 79 70.
