This is what the EU has established for roaming in member countries: we still have a few years left

The member countries of the European Union have agreed to renew the agreement referring to free roaming rates within their territory until 2032, which means that whenever you travel through Europe you will have coverage and mobile data at no extra cost in any of these places.

Roaming is a service offered by your mobile line that allows you to call and connect to the Internet abroad. Since 2017 in the European Union (EU) this service is free within the borders of the European Economic Area and since then everything has been an advantage.

Although it is true that, until this week, the future of roaming in Europe was somewhat uncertain, due to the need to renew the agreement and with the news that this free roaming privilege has officially come to an end in the United Kingdom due to Brexit .

For this reason, there was a certain stir around the fact that this agreement was going to be able to be renewed. Let’s remember that when this new regulation was announced 5 years ago, it was made with the intention of protecting the user from abusive rates from telephone companies when traveling abroad.

And this week, an agreement was reached to extend this regulation until 2032, so we will have free roaming in Europe for at least 10 more years. From what we have been able to find out in terms of the rules, everything will continue to be the same as before, that is, you will be able to make and receive calls at no cost, you will be able to connect to the Internet and you will be able to send and receive text messages.

The main novelty is that, if a user connects from a non-terrestrial network, the operators will be obliged to notify the user that costs may apply, and in the event that the bill amounts to 50 euros, the company will have to stop service automatically.

“With the regulation of roaming we have all benefited from Roam-like-at-home. This is a very tangible benefit of our single European market. The extension of this regulation will maintain price competitiveness between operators and allow consumers continue to enjoy free roaming services for the next ten years.” Margrethe Vestager , Executive Vice President for a Europe Fit for the Digital Age.
