Toyota Proace City: the 100% electric variant of the Japanese small van hits the market

Toyota launches the Proace City Electric on the Spanish market, the 100% electric variant of its small van manufactured in the Spanish plant in Vigo by the Stellantis Group. A vehicle with a 136 horsepower engine and a 50 kW battery, which gives it 280 km of approved autonomy. Undoubtedly, a good option to reduce pollution and emissions in the center of large European cities.

Toyota launches its 2022 range of the Proace City on the market in which interesting diesel and gasoline engine innovations are offered, in addition to this 100% electric variant. This version comes to complete a wide range of options in the Spanish market. As for its price, the Toyota Proace range starts at 14,203 euros or for only 330 euros per month through a leasing operation through the Kynto One division.

The novelty of the Proace City is the arrival of electric versions.

But without a doubt the great novelty in the Proace City 2022 range is the arrival of the electric version that uses a 136 horsepower engine and 260 Nm of torque. In this case, it incorporates a 50 kW lithium-ion battery, which gives it a range in the WLTP cycle of 280 km. As for its charger, incorporated as standard in the vehicle, it is 11 kW, which allows the battery to be recharged in 50 minutes on a fast charging post and between five and seven and a half hours on a wall charger.

Inside, this variant differs from the versions with a heat engine due to its instrument panel, which is specific. It offers exclusive information on consumption, percentage of battery use and estimated autonomy with the remaining charge. It is also different because it no longer has a gear lever, which is replaced by a selector with the different positions of use, forward gear, reverse gear and the option of maximum retention “B”. This option allows you to produce electricity in retentions and braking. And it also includes the driving mode selector, with three options: power, normal and eco.

Regarding its cargo volume, this electric version provides the same as the rest of the variants with a thermal engine in the range, which ranges between 3.3 and 4.3 m³. And as far as its weight is concerned, the long body variant can carry up to 750 kilos of cargo while the L1 medium body goes up to 800 kilos. In both cases, its towing capacity is another 750 kilos.

The Proace City Electric is available with two body sizes, medium and long, and also with two different configurations depending on how the vehicle will be used. The Van version is exclusively for cargo and has only two front seats and a large rear cargo compartment, while the Combi version has five seats, with folding rear seats and the rest of the cargo. And as for the versions of use more like a tourism or a minivan, they are the so-called Family.

Made in Vigo

Regarding their prices, the City Electric versions are available from €25,155 without tax, while the variant for private customers starts at €39,000. But thanks to the Moves III plan, professional clients can access aid of up to €5,000 while for individuals this aid can reach up to €7,000. This vehicle is also offered for renting through Kinto One for a price starting at 495 euros per month plus VAT, for a 48-month contract and 15,000 km per year.

But the Proace range has more important changes with the 2022 version. Interestingly, the Combi and Family variants receive a new 130-horsepower 1.5 diesel engine, associated with an eight-speed automatic transmission. This version comes to replace the 130-horsepower 1.2 gasoline engine, which is no longer on the market.

With this, in addition to the new electric versions, the Proace range is offered with two 100 or 130 horsepower diesel engines, as well as a 1.2-liter gasoline engine with 110 gasoline horsepower, which is available for the Verso version. The prices of the Toyota Proace City for a professional client start at 14,203 euros, without taxes, while for private clients they start at 23,600 euros, in this case with taxes. As for all-inclusive leasing through Kynto One, the City Van is available from €330 per month for a 48-month contract and 15,000 km per year

The most curious thing is that now that the Stellantis Group has stopped marketing the passenger variants of its Berlingo, Rifter and Combo with a thermal engine, it only sells the electric ones, Toyota markets these models with both diesel and gasoline engines. But it’s all an emissions problem. The Japanese brand has a very low level of emissions in its sales in Europe, thanks to the massive use of hybrid versions, while the Stellantis Group must reduce its emissions to avoid having to pay fines in the European Union.
