Toyota Yaris Cross, a new well-armed model for the ‘B-SUV war’

Toyota had not yet competed in the ‘fashion battle’ of the Spanish and European market: the B-SUV segment. The small SUVs are already the kings of the sales charts, and the Japanese firm has adapted, with great success in design and functionality, the small Yaris to enter the battlefront well armed.

The recent new generation of the Toyota Yaris was found, almost unexpectedly, with the title of Best Car of the Year in Europe 2021, with which the range of the compact of the Japanese firm starts from a good base to develop its ‘satellite’ versions, that is, mainly for the launch of the Yaris Cross Electric Hybrid, which is now arriving on our roads with the ambition of waging ‘war’ in the bloody ‘battle’ of the B-SUV segment or small SUVs, today the number one of the Spanish sales lists.

The design line is finished off with a rear that is as simple as it is powerful.

Although Toyota’s communication managers prefer to name the Yaris Cross as the direct heir of the mythical first generation of the RAV4, launched 25 years ago, and which for many is the true ‘inventor’ of the mega-successful SUV segment, and not the ‘official’ predecessor, the Nissan Qashqai.

And although it’s not that it’s hateful, but rather that it’s impossible to compare bodies two and a half decades apart, the Yaris Cross does inherit character from that little RAV4, the ‘deceptive’ interior space (much larger than what the car looks like). outside) and a more than remarkable off-road behavior (as we had the opportunity to experience in roundabouts flooded by a waterspout in Zahara de los Atunes, Cádiz, the town where the presentation took place).

The interior surprises with its spaciousness both front and rear, despite the size of the car.

A small hybrid SUV

Although we will talk in the near future much more about a car that is destined to live in the ‘chandelier’ of today, it must be said at least that the Toyota Yaris Cross is offered, as is religion in the range of the Japanese firm, of non-plug-in hybridization, and which shares an engine with its ‘younger brother, which is not small’, the Yaris to dry, that is, a Dynamic Force 1.5 three-cylinder, 116 horsepower, and which yields a consumption of between 4.7 and 5.1 liters per 100 kilometers. That its design corresponds one hundred percent to its definition by the people of Toyota, “simple, fast and intelligent”. That its interior space, as with other models in the segment, surprises with its spaciousness despite the size of the model. Which is almost ten centimeters taller, two wider and 24 longer than the ‘street’ Yaris. And that has a trunk of 397 liters.

The Toyota Yaris Cross, which is already available, starts at a price of between 24,000 and 30,300 euros.
