Beard transplant: FUT and FUE technique, which one suits me best?

What used to be a sign of carelessness and even lack of hygiene, became the most desired trend a few years ago. We talk about beards, those great allies for many men and the great torment of many others. Wearing a lush and uniform beard is not possible for everyone, because, as on the head, it is not always sufficiently populated. But, for some time now and more and more men are turning to this technique to get the beard of their dreams.

FUE technique and FUT technique

The lack of beard hair can appear for different reasons, such as genetics, alopecia areata (hair loss in a focal area of the body), a hormonal imbalance or due to stress, diet or lack of exercise. Thus, there are two main beard transplant techniques: the FUE technique and the FUT technique.

The FUE technique is a procedure that consists of extracting the follicular units from the donor area to implant in the recipient area of the patient, which does not leave a scar and allows rapid recovery from the intervention.

The FUT technique (or strip technique) consists of a process in which hair obtained from the back of the head is implanted, extracting a strip of scalp up to 20 centimeters long by 1 wide, which leaves a wide scar that is hidden under the remaining hair.

Which technique to choose

If what the patient wants is to achieve a thicker beard and the area to be covered is more discreet, the best option is the FUE technique. As explained by Dr. María del Naranjo, promoter of the FUE technique in Spain and director of the Medical Unit of the Man Medical Institute, “for men who need to fill in small areas where hair does not grow due to genetics, a touch-up of beard is enough. If what the gentleman prefers is to achieve more density in the beard, I recommend the micro FUE 3D Dual technique, with which a greater number of follicles can be extracted to achieve a natural beard filling”.

However, if the surface to be covered is very large and the patient’s temporal and cervical region is well populated, the FUT technique is best.

Pros and cons of each technique

Both interventions are performed under local anesthesia. In the case of the FUT technique, the process can last between 10 and 12 hours, and in the case of the FUE technique between 3 and 5 hours.

In the FUE technique, the process is less invasive, so recovery is faster. The scars are almost imperceptible and the possibility of implanting the hair one by one, following its natural pattern, makes the result more natural. However, to perform this technique it is necessary for the patient to shave.

The FUT technique has a slower recovery and the scar is much more noticeable. Specifically, the results can be clearly seen after six months, at which time the hair will have come out of 70% of the transplanted follicles, but the final result will be obtained after 10-12 months. However, with this process it is not necessary to shave, since the hair of the rest of the head covers the area that has been extracted for the graft.
