The Minister of Finance, María Jesús Montero, has advanced this Thursday that the VAT on masks will continue at the super-reduced rate of 4% during the first half of 2022.
“We are going to maintain the reduced rate of 4% for masks,” Montero announced during the defense of the 2022 Budgets in the debate on vetoes of the accounts in the Plenary Session of the Senate.
The minister explained that before the end of the year the Government will approve a royal decree-law “to give continuity to this measure for the next six months, where the mask will continue to be mandatory.”
In November 2020, the Government approved the VAT reduction for disposable surgical masks of the general type (21%) to the super-reduced (4%), a measure that ended on December 31 of this year.
In addition, last week, the Government asked the European Commission (EC) to be able to extend until next year the VAT exemption for the purchase of sanitary material to protect against covid-19, such as masks, by hospitals and entities public.
