Watermark: what is it – Dictionary of Economics

Security element used in most banknotes. It consists of differences in density and thickness of the paper that cause variations in its opacity. All these variations form an image, integrated into the paper, which is visible against the light. Because of its variations in thickness, the watermark also has a palpable relief.
