What are mochis, the Japanese dessert that triumphs in Mercadona (and now also in Lidl)

The daifuku mochi, better known in Spain as mochis, are a type of dessert that has made the leap from the New Year festivities in Japan to our tables. Made with a variety of glutinous rice, these sweets are characterized by their great ability to adapt to all kinds of shapes and flavors. Thus, in Spain they are succeeding in their supermarket ice cream version.

The Mercadona chain was one of the first to bring this Japanese dessert to the general public. Three years ago, it presented its range of flavors (mango and coconut), which has received such acceptance that the company sells 26,000 packages of this dessert daily. In addition, this summer it has presented a new flavor, pistachio, of which it sells 8,300 packages a day.

Manufactured by the supplier Totaler Helados Estiu (Valencia), this product is sold in a pack of 6 frozen units. Thus, the company recommends leaving it at room temperature for two or three minutes before serving. Its price is 2.65 euros.

This Japanese furor has led the supermarket chain Lidl to present its own range of mochis, under the Gelatelli brand. Launched for this summer, it is made up of four flavours: chocolate, coconut, mango and vanilla. Its price is 2.55 euros and six units also come.
