what is a dialer

The word dialer is Anglo-Saxon and refers to a telephone call system in general. But when we talk about dialers in the field of Internet, we are referring to programs that connect us to the Internet through a high-cost number. We will see it in detail.

Dialers are a way of making money that some web pages of dubious morality have. These pages usually force us to install a program to access certain content.

In general, as we should know, we must not accept the installation of a program on our computer, unless we know exactly what program it is and we are the ones who have decided to install it. Also that the program comes from a company we trust.

In the case of dialers, they are programs that are installed on our computer and create Internet access via telephone line, apart from what we may have in our system. Internet access from a dialer is done through a special, high-rate telephone number, a 905 or something similar, so that while we are connected to the Internet through that connection, we are being charged a really high amount, much more than what we would be charged for accessing the Internet through our usual connection.

The page that the dialer has installed on our computer may have content that can only be viewed while we are accessing the Internet through the dialer. In the worst case, the dialer also tries to make Internet access always through the connection it has created, which is more expensive and for which they charge money.

If we have a computer that connects by modem, there is the possibility that a dialer changes the Internet connection and makes it through the high rate number. However, if we have a modem or router with ADSL, or we connect to the Internet through a local network, a dialer will not be able to do anything, because in order to work and be charged we must have a modem installed and be able to dial a telephone of those they charge us a higher rate than usual. In addition, the computer’s modem should be connected with the cable to the telephone line. If there is no cable, it is impossible for a call to be made through the modem, so it is a good idea to remove the telephone cable if you do not intend to use it.

So, so that they can not rob us with a dialer, we must always keep in mind that we do not install programs on our system. But what will really give us security is not having Internet access via modem or not having a modem installed in our computer, or not having the telephone cable plugged into the modem. Thus, we will not be able to make any connection to the Internet by telephone and therefore, our computer will not be able to connect to the Internet by a telephone in which we have to pay more.

Although many people have managed to make a lot of money at the expense of unsuspecting users, today dialers have gone a bit out of fashion, with most Internet connections in Spain being carried out via ADSL. Possibly in other countries they are still commonly used.

A page that installs a dialer to obtain income, in my opinion, is as if it were stealing its own visitors. Whenever we are asked to install a program that we are not looking for or that we think we do not need, doubt the intentions of the page. Leaving her immediately will be a good idea.
