When to wash your hands to avoid the spread of Covid-19: the five key moments

Hand washing is one of the basic tools to prevent the spread of Covid-19. The official account of the Government of Spain with information of interest to citizens on Public Health issues has recently recalled which moments are the most important.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) explains through its website that washing hands with soap and water is the best way to remove germs in most situations. Thus, from Public Health they have wanted to remember the situations where hand washing is key:

1. Before eating

2. Going to the bathroom

3. After being in public places

4. By touching the objects of others

5. After coughing or sneezing

If soap and water are not immediately available, a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol can be used.

How to wash your hands correctly

The CDC explains on its website the five steps to follow to wash your hands well:

1. Wet your hands with clean running water (warm or cold), turn off the tap and lather your hands.

2. Rub your hands with the soap until it foams. Rub the foam on the backs of your hands, between your fingers and under your nails.

3. Rub hands together for at least 20 seconds. Do you need something to measure time? Hum the ‘Happy Birthday’ song twice from start to finish.

4. Rinse hands thoroughly under clean running water.

5. Dry them with a clean towel or air dry.
