Why stretch marks appear and what we can do to prevent or improve them

Stretch marks can appear at any age. They are more common during pregnancy, puberty, menopause, or any time there is a sudden change in weight. Rocío Escalante, owner of Arbosana Farmacia and expert in dermopharmacy, reveals why they appear and what we can do to prevent and improve them.

The pharmacist Rocío Escalante explains that “stretch marks are irregular lines that cross the skin like scars. In the first phase they are red, the perfect time to treat them with good results. Over time, stretch marks turn white, so they are hard to remove.”

Why do they appear?

As the pharmacist explains, stretch marks appear due to a sudden stretching of the skin, which is why they are common in pregnancy and in weight changes. As the skin stretches, the collagen and elastin fibers break down, producing these irregular marks. They occur mainly on the hips, thighs, buttocks, abdomen, and even on the arms, lower back, and legs. It is simply an aesthetic problem, it does not entail any health risk.

Can they be prevented?

To a certain extent it is possible to prevent them, always keeping the skin very hydrated, and especially at times of risk: pregnancy, adolescence, when on a diet… Anti-stretch mark creams help maintain skin elasticity. They should be applied twice a day, morning and night, with a massage. Creams with centella asiatica, hyaluronic acid, urea, oils, such as rosehip oil or sweet almond oil, work well. If we treat them in the initial stage we can see improvement. If they have been on the skin for some time, we recommend going to an aesthetic center where they will guide you on possible treatments.
